OK... the BBC didn't actually report that... but at the end of August, a BBC2 film crew came to town and shot part of their series "Masters of the Sea" on the MJM 29z. The documentary covers Britian's development as a global naval power so they wanted a classic looking vessel, using Hong Kong as the background for the segment on opening trade with China. The also wanted a modern vessel that paralleled the technological advances talked about in the film (the advent of steam power), not to mention a boat that could quickly and comfortably get the crew to the filming locations, so no slow and noisy motor junks or workboats. Presenter Dan Snow did all of the on screen driving, easily negotiating the busy morning traffic around the Central Piers. The director and crew loved the 29z's look and style and commented on how the large pilothouse made it easy to get the right shots. For my part, I got try my hand as a production assistant - that is holding lights, handing out towels and drinks... it was a fun day with perfect, clear and sunny skies. And the director said it was the best day of filming she can remember.... I can't wait to see the program!
